Lallemand Animal Nutrition introduces ProTernative® Milk in the United States

Lallemand Animal Nutrition introduces ProTernative® Milk to the U.S. dairy market. It’s a specialized formulation of the active dry yeast (ADY) probiotic, Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079, which helps reduce the negative impact of stress in pre-weaned calves.

“Stress adversely affects the immune system, making a calf more vulnerable to disease,” says Angel Aguilar, Ph.D., Dipl. ACAN, Technical Services Manager, Lallemand Animal Nutrition. “In dairies, about 79 percent of deaths in pre-weaning calves are due to scours, digestive and respiratory disorders associated with stress.1 Sources of stress can include many events that pre-weaning calves are regularly exposed to, including: abrupt feed changes, weather changes (heat or cold), transportation, vaccination and weaning. ProTernative Milk offers a proactive approach that helps reduce the harmful effects of stress in the digestive system and start calves off right.”

S. c. boulardii CNCM I-1079 has been shown to favor beneficial microbes in the lower gastrointestinal tract in cattle and other animals. During periods of stress, this ADY has been shown to help cattle lower levels of morbidity, mortality and improve average daily gain (ADG).2,3

ProTernative Milk is specifically designed to achieve the highest level of dispersion in milk or milk replacer fed to neonatal calves. Each pouch contains 600 standard feedings. A standard, 5-gram feeding supplies 10 billion colony-forming units (CFU) of S. c. boulardii CNCM I-1079 per head per day. When additional stressors are present, a 10-gram feeding rate that supplies 20 billion CFU per head per day is recommended.

The strain S. c. boulardii CNCM I-1079 was scientifically selected for consistency and its unique ability to positively impact health and performance. In addition to specifically selecting the strain, Lallemand Animal Nutrition applies stringent manufacturing and quality-assured production processes to ensure the efficacy of its probiotic and prebiotic products.

“Among all the animals on a dairy farm, the highest illness and mortality rates occur in pre-weaned calves. Reducing these losses helps calves start off right. Plus, it can make a significant contribution to an operation’s bottom line,” Dr. Aguilar says. “Healthy calves provide a strong foundation for the health of your herd and profitability of your operation.”
