The vitamin D recommendations have increased over the years, yet both US, Canadian and European governments are reviewing the current recommended dietary intakes of vitamin D, and are likely to increase them due to the evolving research on the increasing benefits of vitamin D.

USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans
Recommend to older people and people exposed to insufficient ultraviolet light for the production of vitamin D substantially higher daily intakes .
Canadian Dermatology Association
In order to lessen the health risks associated with skin cancer yet still reap the known and possible benefits of vitamin D, the CDA recommends people concerned about vitamin D levels to take 1,000 IUs daily , particularly during the Canadian winter.
Recommends 1,000 IUs daily because the current evidence suggests this amount will help reduce cancer risk with the least potential for harm in their opinion.
National Osteoporosis Foundation
According to NOF recommendations, adults under age 50 need 400-800 IU of vitamin D daily, and adults age 50 and older need 800 – 1,000 IU of vitamin D daily.
