Propionibacterium Strain

• Application

  Bova-Pro® is a naturally occurring Propionibacterium strain (P5) that was identified at Oklahoma State University in the early 1990’s and has the ability to reduce nitrate/nitrite toxicity in the rumen. Nitrate toxicity is a common problem and leads to reduced animal performance, reproductive efficiency and in acute cases will cause death. The Bova-Pro strain has been proven to reduce the Nitrite in the rumen to non toxic nitrogenous compounds therefore minimizing the risk of toxicity. The strain is naturally occurring in the rumen and if the Bova-Pro® is administered it will populate the rumen, therefore leading to treatment frequency of once every 180 days. The strain will remain active in the presence of ionophores and antibiotics and is available in the form of a capsule or as a concentrate. .

  Field led:

  Prevents conversion of the bloods hemoglobin to methehemoglobin by reducing the nitrite levels in the rumen. Methehmoglobin will be unable to carry oxygen leading many chronic and sub-acute toxicity problems. Product used successfully in areas of high nitrate levels in water or when cattle consume high nitrate forages.

  A natural rumen bacteria that has a defined mode of action and will populate the rumen once administered. Papers on the Bova-Pro®  product has been published in the journal of Animal Science and in the American Society of Microbiology
